28 Feb

So… long time, no talk!

I sincerely apologize for my total absence for the last few days. Unfortunately things have not been so great in my world this week.

Starting Sunday morning, I got smacked upside the head with a nasty stomach bug. I basically ended up sleeping through about 80% of Sunday… and Monday. I was barely able to keep anything down. It was horrendous.

By Tuesday I thought I was finally doing better. I was able to stay awake for more of the day, I managed to eat a few 100 calories of food without it coming back up.

Until I couldn’t.

Then this happened.

I was so weak, and so dehydrated, and so EMPTY, that my poor stomach was literally cramping in on itself. I couldn’t even sit up straight anymore.

Guys, this was the worst pain I’ve ever been in. Ever.

We spent over 4 hours in the ER. I got pumped with fluids, potassium, and pain meds. I even got a shot in my rear to stop my horrible stomach cramps.

The ER doctor said he believes I have the rotavirus, a severe viral infection that usually presents more with children (which is who I got it from), and has even been known to cause death in infants because of how dehydrating it can be. It causes severe gastroenteritis, which is basically an irritation or inflammation of the stomach and intestines. Which would be why my poor system got completely overwhelmed.

I am out now, but I’m still definitely in “recovery” mode. I’m lucky to be able to stay awake for more than 5-6 hours, and I’m still having a very difficult time eating food. But I’m working on it, and I’m on the mend. I hope at least.

Knock on wood.

So there you have it – why I’ve totally disappeared. I just didn’t have a whole lot to share the last few days, and my eats have basically consisted of small bowls of applesauce and chicken noodle soup. And LOTS of diluted gatorade.

I hope you all are having a better week than I am!

So tell me: Have you ever ended up in the hospital with an illness?

Five Favorites Friday #9

22 Feb

Good morning guys!! And happy Friday!!!

I am SO pumped that it’s Friday, because that means I just have to survive the day and then it’s the weekend! And with NOTHING on the agenda for this weekend, that means lots of relaxing, TV marathoning, and house chores – which is exactly what I need this weekend.

Some good ole’ fashioned veg time. I’m feeling a Teen Mom 2 marathon coming up. Don’t judge.

But as I said, that means I need to survive today – which might actually be a feat in itself as I have a packed schedule today. Meetings starting at 8:30am at one end of our catchment, and ending at 5pm at the total opposite end. Me and my car are going to be good friends today!

I haven’t quite figured out the whole lunch thing yet…

ANYWAY, since it’s Friday that means it’s time for a special tradition around here: Five Favorites Friday. Where I talk about some totally random things that I’m loving this week!

1. Favorite Weeknight Dinner: Quick and Easy Fish

Last night was a little bit of a struggle for me guys. I was feeling stressed after a crazy day of work, and had a whole list of things that I needed to get done at home. Which may or may not have ended up in a mild breakdown while driving home from the gym with Chris on the phone…

So we decided to cancel a few of our errands and make it a chill night in. Complete with a super easy and delicious dinner (prepared by the hubby because he’s awesome).

Simple salmon (salt, pepper, lemon juice and a sliced lemon on top) broiled in the over for a few minutes, with some quinoa and asparagus. So basic, but so full of flavor! I love the edition of the lemon wedge!

2. Favorite Surprise Mail: Giveaway winner!

I arrived home tonight to an exciting package in the mail from NuNaturals! A few weeks ago I won a giveaway from Erica at For the Sake of Cake and I was so pumped when I opened the box!

So. Much. Great. Stuff!!! NuNaturals totally rocked this and loaded me up with products! I’ve been wanting to try their stevia drops forever (since I’ve seen them all over the blog world), but I’ve never actually had the guts to fork over the cash in the store in case I’m not a fan. But now I don’t have to!

I got totally spoiled with 5 different NuStevia liquid drops (vanilla, lemon, peppermint, orange and chocolate), some NuStevia prebiotic blend, and a back of 50 NuStevia packets. I can’t wait to use this stuff!

Now does anyone have any good recipes or tips???

3. Favorite New Jam: DJ Earworm

Last weekend Chris downloaded some new music, which I have been looking through to come up with some new gym playlists. When we first started dating Chris introduced me to DJ Earworm, and when I saw that he had downloaded some new mashups I was pumped!

They are such a great mix of different popular songs, and usually have a great beat (which is perfect for running/strength training in my opinion).

Check out one of his newest:

4. Favorite New Gym Routine: Cardio-Strength Mix

You guys know that I have totally been loving on Tina’s Best Body Bootcamp for awhile now, so feel free to roll your eyes as another love fest, but I am totally loving this phase of bootcamp.

Tina puts together 4 different phases (each lasting 2 weeks) throughout bootcamp, and this one is all about Power Training. Which basically means that there are a lot of strength moves followed by quick cardio bursts.

And I’m in love.

I’ve been searching for a good way to incorporating some more “intense” cardio into my workouts, because when it comes to cardio I often fall back on old habits of “slow and steady”. A 30 minute steady run. 45 minutes on the elliptical. That kind of thing.

But I’m LOVING mixing up strength moves with short bursts of plyometrics like burpees or mountain climbers. Not only does it get my heart rate up like crazy, I push myself harder because I just keep saying “it’s only 20 seconds! That’s nothing!”

If you’re not familiar with this kind of training, I totally recommend checking it out, because I’m kind of in love with it and I think it’s a great way to change up your routine. Plus it even makes things like squat jumps and mountain climbers not seem to terrible. So that’s a win, right?

Also, you should check out Best Body Bootcamp if you want to learn some of these techniques and more awesome strength moves!

5. Favorite Helper: My Canine Valentine

I realize that this TECHNICALLY goes back in to last week, but it was just too cute not to share.

We’re not quite sure what kind(s) of dog Laney is since we got her from the pound, but one thing that we’re positive about is that there is some sort of herding dog in there, because Laney loves to follow us around. She always needs to know what is going on, and who is where, and she’ll check in on you frequently if you’re in another room just to make sure you’re still there.

Which also means that she can get quite underfoot in the kitchen!

This is her supervising the valentine’s day sushi operation. Just making sure that daddy knows what he is doing!

And when I’m not paying attention and my camera accidentally takes a picture while I’m picking it up, this is what I get. The dog stink eye.

Well that’s all I have for today’s Five Favorites Friday!

So tell me: What are you loving this week?

New Strength Moves

21 Feb

Happy Thursday everyone!!!

I’m in a chipper mood this morning because it’s Thursday, which means it’s almost Friday, which means it’s ALMOST the weekend! Hooray!!! (I feel a little bit like Rebecca Black here… “and Saturday comes after that…”)

Anyway, yesterday ended up being a pretty awesome day despite having a rough start. If you follow me on twitter (and you should – @myfreckledlife), you saw my not so happy status yesterday mid-morning…

Things didn’t start off so way. But I like to think of that  moment as the bottom of my day, because things did start to go up from there. A little productivity, a little gym time with Best Body Bootcamp. Then I came home and did a repeat of dinner last night.

I also also still dreaming about those amazing broiled grapefruits from brunch this past weekend, so I decided to attempt to recreate it. I only had pink grapefruits (instead of the red ones), so while they are not NEARLY as pretty, they definitely tasted amazing. I would totally recommend trying this out if you’re a grapefruit fan!

Favorite New Strength Moves

But there is something that I wanted to talk to you guys about today, and it’s 100% inspired by the work I’m doing in Best Body Bootcamp.

One thing that I LOVE about bootcamp (and is part of the reason that I keep going back to it) is that Tina is great at introducing new and different moves into the program. No more basic bicep curl or pushup – it’s all about creative variations that work muscles you never knew you had!

For example, you guys have already heard my profess my love/hate (as in hurts so good) with the curtsy lunges and the crocodile walk, but here are a few more of my new favorite moves that you should definitely check out!

1. The Plank with Dumbell Row (aka regular planks are for suckers)

This move takes the plank to a whole new level, and is a great move to work more than just your core muscles!

2. The Scorpion (aka Look like a fool)

I totally did NOT expect this one to be as difficult as it was. But it is SOOOO much more difficult than it looks. I was rolling all over the place at the gym.

3. The Balance Dog with Kickback (aka Looks easy, makes you want to cry)

Holy cow, I never thought adding a balance aspect to tricep kickbacks would be so difficult! I was shaking and cursing all at the same time!

4. Downward Dog Pushup (aka Yoga meets Body Builders)

This has probably been one of my FAVORITE moves of the entire bootcamp. It seriously works muscles that I feel like I don’t use very often and leaves me sweaty and sore in the best way possible. Plus people seem to look at me funny in the gym when I start to do these until they realize how hard they must be (as told by my awkward grunting).

Anyway, those are just a few of my new favorite moves from Tina’s bootcamp. Also, just as an FYI – Tina’s next round of bootcamp sign ups start March 4th! Be sure to check it out if you’re interested. It’s totally affordable and will absolutely kick your rear like you never thought possible. Plus there is a great community within bootcamp that helps to support and motivate you. Check it out!

Well that’s all I’ve got for today folks! Have a great Thursday!

So tell me: What new moves have you tried out at they gym? What is your favorite go-to strength move? Or what is your most hated move?
